What once was distained we now praise

From the alas defunct Rocky Mountain News (sigh), an 1895 article gives potent insight into a fallacious stereotype that has been at work for at least 110 years, apparently—that of the government-hand-out-dependent-Indian. And the cherry on top, for the modern reader, is that the disdainful description of the “Pottamotomie” team’s living situation—“receive enough…to support them without work, and all they have to do…is to play ball”—could be an exact description of every contemporary professional athlete’s living situation.

—Lara Mann

Text: “There is a Pottamatomie Indian baseball club in Athens, Mich. which is billed in neighborhood towns as a nine ‘who receive enough from the government to support them without work, and all they have to do for exercise is to play ball.’
