Santee Frazier coming to Illinois

February 12, 2009

If you are in the area on Monday, February 16, you will want to catch Cherokee/Pottawatomi poet Santee Frazier reading from his first book, Dark Thirty, at the Illini Union Bookstore. Frazier is also an occasional short film “star.” Here’s an example of his humor in the film, “Osama Likes Fry Bread.” It examines “insider” humor and stereotypes of American Indians.

This week, I’ll be reporting from the AWP conference. This year you can’t throw a dead cat without hitting a Native writer. At last we’ve got a contingency of indigenous writers at a major writing conference. I’ll also be on Twitter at the conference. You can follow me here. Stay tuned.
